Lately, I’ve been researching how organizations must structurally evolve to thrive as technology reshapes traditional operating models. Through this ongoing work, I’ve been exploring what I see as the ultimate formula for future relevance: Sustained Success = HI x AI (Human Ingenuity multiplied by Artificial Intelligence).

This relationship is multiplicative, not additive, because if human ingenuity is suppressed to a zero, no amount of AI investment can prevent the entire output from collapsing.

While AI raises our ceiling for speed and scale, it is human ingenuity, the moral discernment and creative judgment required to govern AI, that dictates our true strategic distinctiveness. But human ingenuity doesn’t happen in a vacuum: it requires (human) agency to unlock it. As we enter the reality of agentic AI, we must actually build cultures of agency for both human and artificial actors. It is within these shared environments that our people can apply their empathy and creativity to cooperate with and govern AI, not just compete with it.

This research has led me to a strong personal conviction: to successfully navigate this new reality, corporate boards need a People & Culture expert at the table.

While we often see this expertise at the executive level, there remains a critical gap in the boardroom. Expertise in human-AI dynamics is no longer just a soft cultural initiative: it is a hard strategic requirement for future-proof governance.

Bringing a CHRO/CPO perspective to the board ensures we recognize that:

  • Transformation requires Governance: As the board’s purview shifts toward systemic resilience and AI integration, directors must ensure humans remain “above the loop” as the ethical owners and verifiers of technology, anchoring digital scale to a “Strong Core” of deep purpose and shared values.
  • Complex Networks need Organizational Orchestrators: While boards often have technical experts, they now require leaders who understand organizational design and human-machine interaction. A CPO perspective is essential for guiding the transition from rigid legacy hierarchies to dynamic networks of teams, effectively coordinating the complex collaboration between human talent and artificial agents.
  • Trust is a Hard Currency: To oversee highly volatile environments, boards need leaders who can balance rigorous truth-telling with empathy. Trust is no longer a soft metric; it is the structural glue and the hard currency that keeps the organizational engine running smoothly.

A progressive CHRO/CPO – one who is fluent in both human dynamics and technological scale – is uniquely equipped to ensure that as we scale our machine intelligence, the board does not lose sight of the people governing it.
